Elmer Otto Johann Edwin, son of William and Bertha (Rathe) Peters, was born January 31, 1921, on the family farm in rural Bremer County. He was baptized on February 20, 1921 and confirmed on April 14, 1935, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Readlyn. He received his education at Fremont #8 country school. On December 12, 1948, he was united in marriage with Irene Louise Bertha Doepke, at St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Tripoli by Rev. Theophil E. Blaufuss. The couple farmed near Tripoli for over fifty years. He was a long time member of Faith United Church of Christ. Elmer prided himself on being able to look at something and figure out how to make it himself. He was able to fix anything. He enjoyed going to auctions, fishing, spearing for carp, eating fish, sometimes better than catching the fish, sharing riddles, playing cards and music. He also loved to spend time with his family.
Elmer is survived by his three daughters, Susan (Larry) Brown of Frederika, Sandra (Gary) Snyder of Frederika, and Shirley (Paul) Regenold of Charles City; four grandchildren, Daniel (Shelly) Brown, Denise (Larry) Sears, Laura Snyder, and Amy (Daniel) Price; one step-grandchild, Bradley (Stephanie) Brown; two great-grandchildren, Shane and Rachael Sears; two step-great-grandchildren, Ashley and Terri Brown; two brothers, Elston (Gladys) Peters of Waterloo and Vernon (Verdeen) Peters of Cedar Falls; and one sister-in-law, Darlene Peters of Readlyn.
In addition to his parents and wife, Irene, who died in 2009, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Scott Snyder; one step-granddaughter, Jackie Brown; one son-in-law, Randy Heller; five brothers, Leslie, Erwald, Donald, Wilbert, and Robert Peters; and two sisters, LaVonne Woodring and Janice Risse.
